Artist Jesse Melanson completes large-scale public artwork at the heart of downtown

SAN BRUNO, CA — The City of San Bruno celebrates the completion of a new mural at Centennial Plaza, painted by artist Jesse Melanson. The artwork covers the south-facing wall of 474 San Mateo Avenue, one of the two walls that frame the plaza, and is visible from the plaza, nearby walkways, and San Mateo Avenue.

The mural, titled "Blooming Together," is an imaginative celebration of community, movement, creativity, and connection. Melanson painted the piece over three weeks in October, using his signature low-polygon style to capture the city's energy, diversity, and sense of possibility. Melanson, known professionally as JMEL, is a Truckee-based muralist whose large-scale work appears in communities across the country. He was selected through an open call to artists issued by the City and the San Bruno Culture and Arts Commission in spring 2026.

"Centennial Plaza is where our community comes together, and this mural adds a rich story and a vibrant sense of place," said Travis Karlen, Community Services Director. "We're grateful to Jesse for creating something that residents and visitors will enjoy for years to come."

Melanson shared that he drew inspiration from San Bruno's role as both a connected urban hub and gateway to nature. "Through bold color, abstract geometry, and immersive scale, the mural aims to create an uplifting and memorable landmark that celebrates San Bruno's identity while encouraging joy, curiosity, and human connection," Melanson said.

Centennial Plaza hosts community events, cultural celebrations, and everyday gatherings throughout the year. The public is invited to visit the plaza to see the mural in person.
