DAYLIGHTING LAW UPDATE: WARNING PHASE CONTINUES THROUGH OCTOBER ☀️
The San Bruno Police Department, in partnership with the California
Office of Traffic Safety, is continuing our mission to keep streets
safe for everyone who walks, rolls, bikes, or drives through our city.
As a reminder, California’s “Daylighting” law (AB 413) — which took
effect at the start of 2025 — makes it illegal to park within 20 feet
of a crosswalk (or 15 feet if there’s a curb extension/bulb-out). The
goal? To help drivers and pedestrians actually see each other before
saying hello the hard way. 👀
👮♀️ October = Education & Warnings
Throughout October, our focus remains on education and awareness.
Drivers who park too close to crosswalks may receive a warning notice —
a friendly reminder that corners are for turning, not parking. (We get
it… finding parking in San Bruno can feel like winning the lottery 🎟️,
but those few extra feet make a big safety difference!)
🚓 November = Reactive Enforcement
Starting in November, we’ll transition from warnings to citations.
However, enforcement will stay reactive — meaning our officers won’t be
out with a “crosswalk measuring tape” looking for violators. We’ll
respond on a complaint basis instead. If you see a vehicle parked too
close to a crosswalk, you can report it through SB Responds or by
calling our non-emergency line.
🚗💡 We know this change might trim a few parking spots, but it helps
everyone see (and be seen) at intersections — keeping kids, seniors,
and everyone in between a little safer. Think of it as giving
crosswalks their personal space… because even pavement needs
boundaries. 😉
