Welcome! What's in this issue? |
|
Hello! Hopefully
Memorial Day weekend has given you time and space to enjoy the weather
and spend time with your loved ones. For City staff, we have been
developing next year’s budget which we plan to review with the
community and City Council this June.
You have probably noticed
the amount of construction going on in the City – whether it’s new
housing or businesses – or fixing potholes, improving sidewalks,
repaving streets, or adding bike lanes – there is something going on. |
|
|
Measure
Q, which the voters approved last year, promises to add significant
funds to our capital improvement program and will support various
projects over the next several years. With that in mind, there’s a lot
to be excited for.
As always, thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm, and we hope to see you in the community. |

FISCAL YEAR 2025-2026 BUDGET UPDATE |
|
|
The draft of the City Manager’s recommended budget is now available for viewing on the City’s website.
The
budget was a challenge this year because anticipated revenues were
lower than expected, and this called upon all departments to think
creatively and carefully about how to ensure we continue to deliver
services, maintain staff morale, and keep working on critical projects.
The
budget book provides an overview of the City’s financial situation, its
departments, and capital improvement projects. The appendix includes
the City’s various financial policies, which outline our practices when
it comes to public debt, investment, and spending. |
|
The City Council's Priority Initiatives Another
key part of the budget is to ensure each of the City Council’s priority
initiatives are funded and worked on each year. This includes
initiatives which are still in progress and have been carried over into
the coming fiscal year. The City Council’s five priority initiatives
for this year include: - Mitigating illegal dumping through the “Cleanup San Bruno” initiative
- Establishing a communication and engagement program
- Completing Phase 2A of the Regulated Output (RO) Streetlight Retrofit project
- Reassessing the Residential Parking Permit Program
- Performing a strategic analysis of major City-owned properties
Upcoming Dates We
hope you will join the City Manager’s Office and staff from all
departments on Tuesday, June 3, at the Recreation and Aquatic Center
from 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM for a budget workshop.
The budget is then
formally received by the City Council at its meeting on June 10. Please
join us on Tuesday June 24 for a Public Hearing on the City Manager’s
Recommended Budget and the Capital Improvement Program Budget for
Fiscal Year 2025-2026. |

SAN BRUNO-NARITA SISTER CITIES UPDATE |
|
|
Earlier
this year, we hosted 14 delegates from the City of Narita for a week.
In addition to an event at Centennial Plaza, students and adult
delegates spent time with staff and the San Bruno Parkside Intermediate
School in the city and around the Bay Area. |
|
Their
very busy first day included a community event at Centennial Plaza held
on Wednesday, March 26, and we were excited to see folks turn out and
even get on stage to play the taiko. |
|
The San Bruno Visit To Japan In
early July, students from San Bruno Parkside that hosted Narita
students will go to Japan to spend a week participating in a variety of
activities, including pulling a mikoshi during the Gion festival.
San
Bruno students have been practicing Japanese with a volunteer
instructor who also helped translate and interpret for staff during the
delegation’s visit in March. Hopefully they are excited to visit Japan
as we are for them! |
|
Next Steps Staff
from the City will be meeting with the school district to plan for the
future of the program to ensure we can continue fostering the sister
city relationship between San Bruno and Narita. |
|
WAY TO GET INVOLVED - CLIMATE ACTION PLAN AND SAFETY ELEMENT UPDATE |
|
|
Last year, the City of San Bruno began developing a Climate Action Plan and
continued updating the Safety Element as part of the General Plan
Update. Staff have held several community workshops to solicit feedback
and share information about potential strategies to improve
environmental resiliency and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. |
|
This work is led by our Community Development department, and they have partnered with local cities through the Peninsula Resilience Planning Project (PREP) to update San Bruno’s Safety Element. |
|
The
Safety Element is the blueprint for how San Bruno identifies potential
hazards and plans for resilience, risk reduction, and disaster
response. The Safety Element is incorporated into frameworks such as
guidelines for the Emergency Operations Center, building inspections,
and mandated brush clearance.
Recent legislation now requires
cities to incorporate climate resiliency into their Safety Elements.
Projects like PREP demonstrate how emergency and climate change
planning often overlaps between cities and neighboring communities. |
|
FIRE HAZARD SEVERITY ZONE UPDATE |
|
|
The State Fire Marshal released a new map of Fire Hazard Severity Zones earlier this year. |
|
Why Does This Matter? Since
the 1980s, California has seen fires that have devastated communities
throughout the state, and legislators have enacted new rules and
requirements for homeowners and local agencies to mitigate potential
fire hazards.
Importantly, the maps highlight severity or hazard
not risk. Basically, if there were a fire, just how bad would it be?
With that in mind, many of the related requirements are about reducing
the potential severity of a fire, were one to occur. |
|
Consider exploring some of these topics from San Mateo County and the community. |
