Come Learn What Government Really Does
Annual Civics 101 Academy Currently Accepting Applications
August 27, 2025
Redwood City –Ever
wonder where your tax dollars really go? Or who makes the decisions
shaping life in San Mateo County? For nearly two decades, Civics 101
has been the County’s signature program for opening the doors of
government and inviting residents to see and experience how it all
works. The County is now accepting applications for the Fall 2025
class, which kicks off Sept. 4, 2025.
This free, nine-week academy
brings together community members with County leaders, elected
officials and subject matter experts. From K-9 demonstrations and a
mock trial to field trips to a local park and the Maple Street
Correctional Center, Civics 101 offers a hands-on, behind-the-scenes
look at local government.
Attendees
will learn how County government works through presentations and
discussions, while also sharing their own ideas and priorities. Many
past participants have gone on to serve on County boards, commissions,
or even join the County as employees.
Here’s what participants have shared:
“I
learned so much and came away so impressed by our County and the people
who make it work. I strongly encourage others to take Civics 101!” “Civics
101 is a great way to engage and connect with county residents and to
show the important ways the County operations impact us all.” “I
wish more communities would host something similar to educate people
about the many layers of government and the interconnected implications
related to funding, policy & enforcement.” “Meetings
were both professional and fun. Always on time and food was a special
treat each week. Overall, it was exceptional. Thanks for this great
opportunity.”
