Wildfire Mitigation in the Crestmoor Canyon

Work on the wildfire mitigation project has commenced in the Crestmoor Canyon area. The City of San Bruno has contracted the California Conservation Corps (CCC) to work on the defensible space clearance behind homes in Crestmoor Canyon. CCC began mitigation work in July, 2020. The work started at the bottom of Sneath Lane near Engvall Court and proceeds west around the rim of the canyon behind the structures on City property.

CCC will create defensible space zones between the City’s open-space areas and neighboring residential properties. This fuel reduction project will have an immediate impact on the neighboring community, with targeted fuel reduction in the critical defensible space zones. The City of San Bruno is actively working to perform additional fuel reduction and vegetation management in Crestmoor Canyon.

Defensible space is essential to improve your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire. It is the buffer that creates space between a building on a property and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any wildland area that surrounds it. This space is needed to slow or stop the spread of wildfire and it helps protect your home from catching fire—either from direct flame contact or radiant heat. Defensible space is also important for the protection of firefighters.

CCC crews will “spike out” to cut down on the transportation time to and from their base of operation in Watsonville. CCC crews will set up at the lower field at the now Stratford School Campus off Crestmoor Drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Fire Department at 650-616-7096.
