"I
just finished attending the once-a-year oversight committee meeting and
it was enlightening. For the most part the members do their best to
represent the will of the people and review the initiatives that are
funded through Measure G that we voted on. However,
the interesting part was that the city council makes those
recommendations, and the oversight committee reviews them for approval.
But approval is not required for the city council to move ahead with their initiative.
After
6 years of no funding for the police other than the "clean San Bruno"
campaign, tonight they were brought with a request to approve
additional funding that supplements the salary increases for our
police. Doing this would reduce the impact of spending from the city's
general fund, while utilizing the resources that Measure G provides. However,
this also means that the existing initiatives may not receive continued
funding due to the finite amount of annual funds received through our
taxes. It is truly stealing from Peter to pay for Paul.
I spoke on the public comments and expressed my thoughts as you have shared them with me and told them that despite the shell game being played here, it looks like the public will need to spend money from Measure G to hopefully bring the labor negotiations to a conclusion. The city is saying that they cannot balance their budgets without utilizing funds from Measure G."
It
was all very interesting, and I will need to take some time to
internalize what I heard and share my opinion with all of you at some
later date."
