Governor
Newsom has proclaimed a state of emergency to help California prepare
for what forecasters say could be one of the strongest El Niņo events
on record. This means a higher chance of heavy rain, strong winds,
mountain snow, flooding, landslides, and coastal flooding across the
state this fall and winter.
El
Niņo doesn't guarantee a wet winter or any specific storm, but it
raises the odds of severe weather. A few things you can do now:
Know your flood risk, especially if you live near a recent wildfire burn area
Clear drains and gutters before the rain starts
Sign up for local emergency alerts
Make an evacuation plan and keep a go bag ready
- Never drive through flood water — turn around, don't drown
