SFO Leads US Airports in Signing of “Clean Skies for Tomorrow” Statement

Airport joins 60 aviation companies worldwide to advance the use of sustainable aviation fuel

SAN FRANCISCO - September 22, 2021 – The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) today announced that it has joined 60 aviation companies around the world in the signing of a “Clean Skies for Tomorrow” statement to advance the use of sustainable aviation fuel. These signatories are accelerating the supply and use of sustainable aviation fuel to reach 10% of the global aviation fuel supply by 2030. This initiative complements SFO’s own goal to acheve net carbon zero operations by 2030.

“As a leader in the advancement of sustainable aviation fuel, we know that decarbonizing air transportation requires full engagement from every sector of our industry, including airports, fuel suppliers, aircraft manufacturers, and airlines,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “This statement represents the most ambitious and collaborative commitment yet, one which will drive a powerful reduction in carbon emissions.”

Signatories include aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing, fuel producers such as Neste and Shell, major airlines including British Airways, Delta, and KLM, and international airports such as Amsterdam-Schiphol, Dubai, and London-Heathrow. Airport Council International (ACI), the foremost advocate for airport operators, also signed on, but SFO was the only US airport to sign on directly.

In September 2018, SFO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a group composed of eight airlines and fuel producers to work cooperatively on expanding the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels at SFO. The agreement is the first of its kind to include fuel suppliers, airlines, and airport agencies in a collaborative effort to accelerate the global transition to sustainable fuels. SFO has since emerged as one of the leading airports for the use of sustainable aviation fuel.

The Clean Skies for Tomorrow Coalition provides a crucial mechanism for top executives and public leaders across the aviation value chain to align on a transition to sustainable aviation fuels as part of a meaningful and proactive pathway for the industry to achieve carbon-neutral flying.

Members of the coalition agree that achieving net-zero in the sector will require reduction, as far as possible, of the emissions caused by the aviation sector through efforts including the optimization of routes and increased energy efficiency through the use of new aircraft and improved ground operations. Any remaining emissions must be balanced by appropriate carbon removal, to arrive at net-zero emissions in the sector.
