Article Source:  Robert Riechel

I am San Bruno’s trustee to the San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control District.

This district is a member of MVCAC (Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California).

I am asking readers to consider contacting your California legislators and asking them to OPPOSE CA SB 707 and SUPPORT Mosquito Control Funding

San Mateo County (CA) residents can call the San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control District Manager Brian Weber (650-344-8592) with questions or

E=Mail at BWeber@smcmvcd.org.

Residents in other California counties should contact their own Mosquito Districts.

Individuals should consider asking your City Mayor to consider taking the above OPPOSE CA SB 707 and SUPPORTING Mosquito Control Funding actions.

Thanks

MVCAC Joins Coalition Opposing SB 707

We wanted to inform you that the MVCAC Board has formally voted to join the coalition in opposition to Senate Bill 707 (Durazo), aligning with the California Special Districts Association (CSDA) and numerous other local government organizations.

SB 707 proposes expansions to the Brown Act that would place disproportionate and burdensome requirements on mosquito and vector control districts—particularly those serving large populations with limited administrative resources. The most recent version of the bill introduces mandates related to:

  • Determining eligibility based on imprecise and unavailable population data;
  • Costly teleconferencing, translation, and posting requirements;
  • Ambiguous legal provisions that significantly increase litigation risk;
  • Website mandates and accessibility standards that disregard operational realities.

While the bill includes amendments intended to narrow its scope, it continues to pose serious compliance, implementation, and legal challenges for our member districts.

You can review the coalition’s opposition letter, now inclusive of MVCAChere for additional detail and context.

Take Action: Urge Congress to Support Mosquito Control Funding

The American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA), Entomological Society of America (ESA), and more of our partner organizations are calling on Congress to support critical public health funding for mosquito control efforts—and we need your help to amplify this message.

Federal support for mosquito surveillance and control is essential to protect our communities from vector-borne diseases. AMCA is urging members of Congress to prioritize funding for programs like the CDC’s Vector-Borne Disease Centers of Excellence and Mosquito Control Infrastructure Grant Program.

MVCAC strongly encourages each of our member districts to submit letters to their Congressional representatives in support of this effort. AMCA has made it easy to participate through their online Action Center.

Submit your letter today via the button below!

Your voice makes a difference—thank you for helping to protect public health.
