Subject: Request for Support: Federal Mosquito Control Funding Legislation (SMASH Act 2.0)
 
I wanted to request your support for federal legislation important to mosquito and vector control agencies across the country.

The Strengthening Mosquito Abatement for Safety and Health (SMASH) Act 2.0 (S. 5213), introduced in the U.S. Senate on August 3, 2026, with bipartisan sponsorship, has been referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) for consideration. The bill would reauthorize the CDC's Mosquito Abatement for Safety and Health program at $100 million annually from 2027 through 2031, expand support for workforce training and professional development, encourage the use of innovative mosquito control technologies, and improve national preparedness for vector-borne disease emergencies.

The legislation has cleared formal introduction and committee referral, but it needs to advance through the Senate, pass the House of Representatives, and ultimately be signed into law. A companion bill is expected to be introduced in the House in the coming weeks, according to AMCA.

If enacted, SMASH Act 2.0 could provide important federal support for agencies like ours that are responding to emerging threats such as Aedes aegypti, while also strengthening surveillance, public education, staff training, emergency preparedness, and mosquito control programs nationwide. As invasive mosquito species continue to expand across California and other states, sustained federal investment will help local agencies better protect public health. Especially those agencies that lack a sustained funding source.
