Cal OES Earthquake Simulator Tour
|
|
 |
Are you hosting a preparedness event for your
community, organization, or school in October?
The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal
OES) is planning a statewide earthquake simulator tour to encourage
Californians to get prepared and participate in the 2023 Great
California ShakeOut! The simulator provides the opportunity to
experience simulated shaking similar to a magnitude 7.0 earthquake. The
tour will also provide earthquake preparedness information in
partnership with local jurisdictions, at events throughout the state.
If you are interested in hosting a stop along the tour, please complete the request form.

Add Your Public Event
to the ShakeOut Calendar
|
|
Many
ShakeOut participants organize preparedness fairs, workshops, press
conferences, and of course drills/exercises between now and ShakeOut
day (as well as after), that are open to the public or news media to
attend. Some may even be a stop of the Cal OES earthquake simulator
tour!
To list your activity on the ShakeOut website calendar or in our media advisories, please complete our Event Information form.

ROCKETLive! in Your Classroom
|
|
The Southern California Earthquake Center (global headquarters for ShakeOut) and USGS ShakeAlert have partnered with the nationally recognized Rocket Rules program to create earthquake-focused stories,
activity books, and videos for younger students, all featuring their
animated "Rocket" character. Now Rocket can talk LIVE with students
(PreK to 2nd grade) about earthquakes and how to be safe – it’s a
fun, free interactive 20-minute experience with Rocket sharing safety
tips and answering student questions!

On August 24th from 5:30pm - 7:30pm, the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) is hosting a virtual town hall led
by Glenn Pomeroy (CEO of CEA), who will
share information about changes to their earthquake insurance
policy options and how they may impact you. Extreme weather events
driven by climate change (including wildfires and hurricanes), high
inflation, the increasing cost of construction, and CEA’s continued
exposure growth have led to changes in some optional coverage limits.

Retrofit Grants for Older Homes
|
|
More
than 1.2 million homes in high-seismic-hazard areas of California are
particularly vulnerable to earthquake damage because of the way they
were constructed. These homes were also built prior to 1980.
The California Residential Mitigation Program’s Earthquake Brace + Bolt
(EBB) program offers grants up to $3,000 to help offset the cost
of seismic retrofits for such homes. Income-eligible homeowners
also may apply for grants that could provide up to 100 percent of the
retrofit costs.
Thanks to funding from FEMA that is administered by Cal OES, EBB grants
last year were available to homeowners in 521 ZIP Codes. To date, more
than 20,000 Californians have retrofitted their homes with grant
funding from EBB.
To find out if you qualify and sign up to receive information about the next open registration period, visit EarthquakeBraceBolt.com.
